If you want to protect your investments (time & money) you should not release your software without a decent protection. You should avoid protections based on cheap serial numbers that can leak on the internet. If just one number leaks, your application could be used by thousands of unauthorized users.

Do you have a demo mode in your product ?

Giving a demo of your application is probably one of the best way to convince someone to get a license of your product :

• build a striped-down version of your application.
• have some limitations while in demo mode (such as allowing no more than a few records for a database product).
• add a watermark to your application's documents and prints.
• have a startup dialog that takes more and more seconds to dismiss while not registered
• have a full featured demo period, and eventually fall back after to one of the above points.

Whatever limitation is suitable to your demo needs, special protection is needed to secure your application. Don't rely on invisible files or accurate computer clock !
